Volleyball European Championships 2011

Matey Kaziyski – Bulgaria’s Superstar

In his home country people are full of admiration for him and call him “Air Kaziyski”. In 2010 he was voted “Man of the Year”. Last Sunday he seized his third subsequent CEV Champions League title with his current club Trentino: wing-spiker Matey Kaziyski is one of the brightest stars on the European volleyball sky.

With an enormous jumping ability, a dreaded service, an excellent eye for the game and nerves made of steel the now 26-year-old Kaziyski has always been considered a most uncomfortable opponent: “You are in the lead throughout the encounter – and then it’s Kaziyski turn to serve and you loose,” these are the words of Aleksandar Popov, the long-term coach of CSKA Sofia, and they really summarize this Bulgarian volleyball phenomenon in a nutshell.

In the CL Final Four last weekend Kaziyski again made life difficult for his opponents due to his above mentioned qualities. With 19 points he almost single-handedly defeated Zenit Kasan in the final.

One could say that the 2.0

Sinan Cem Tanik – the broadest smile of Turkey

Maybe the Turkish national team is not as glamorous as some of the other teams competing in the upcoming European Championship 2011. But strong players like its captain Sinan Cem Tanik add colour and quality to Austria’s opponent in Pool A, due to which the Turks have gained a certain reputation in the European League over the past few years.

Already before the start of a match Sinan Tanik excels among the other players of his team: The 2m-giant, who currently plays in the ranks of Galatasaray Istanbul, likes to display a broad and sometimes mischievous smile. Due to his dark hair tinged with grey, Tanik can even pass for a Turkish George Clooney. However, his true qualities as a player become visible after the first blow of the whistle.

Austria’s Head Coach Michael Warm got to know the receiver quite well due to the four European League encounters against Turkey in the summer 2010, one of which Austria was able to win 3:1. “He is very experienced. Solid as a rock – he is difficult to kno

Jakub Jarosz - Poland’s Big Name

As a child, though, the man from Nysa, a town located in the vicinity of the Polish-Slovakian border, seemed to have chosen the wrong sport in the beginning – until he found out the “truth” about swimming. “Swim training was not really my kind of training. We had to get up before 7 o’clock in the morning and jump into the cold water to swim lane after lane”, he remembers. Not really the right thing for someone who describes himself as “sleepyhead who likes to stay in bed until late in the morning”.

In addition, volleyball is the sport that is in a way genetically anchored in his family: already his grandfather and father Maciej were volleyball players. The latter even won Olympic gold in 1980 in Moscow, at a time when Poland dominated the sport. "I am proud that my last name is Jarosz but at the same time it is a burden", says the 1.96m tall Jakub.

So far Jakub Jarosz lived up to his renowned name. Two years ago he attracted the public’s attention for the first time in Poland’s n

Tomas Kmet - A Captain for All Seasons

Tomas Kmet is and has always been considered as stabilizing element in his team, someone who does not stick out through show but through performance. The big assets of the 2.02m-giant who is able to give a game the decisive spin, are his powerful attack, hard work, ambition and an uncompromising will to win.

When Tomas Kmet was 12 years old he started to play volleyball for a very simple reason: Like so many Slovakian children at his age he loved ice hockey, but his parents did not have enough money to buy all the equipment necessary for playing ice hockey. Thus Tomas had to choose a different sport – and eventually seized the opportunity that lay before him.

After intensive education and training at a volleyball boarding school, he gained his first experience as player for Petrochema Dubova. In 2001 he won the Slovakian championship for the first time. In 2003 he went to play in the Polish top league to play for Gwardia Wroclaw. He also wore the team jersey of Kedzierzyn until 2

Jochen Schöps - Germany’s Figurehead

With Jochen Schöps Germany’s national team has a world-class diagonal spiker. The 27-year-old Swabian, who for years has been delivering excellent performances in the Russian league, will probably be one of the key figures also in the EuroVolley 2011.

He was once called “soft killer” – a player who can do without big gestures and loud shouting on the court. Schöps puts all his energy into his attacks and his spikes are not limited to shots with brute force, he also has the technical skills to surprise his opponents with cunning variations.

Originally Schöps was about to become a professional swimmer. He had the best assets with his long arms and legs. However, a wise coach fished the then 12-year-old out of the water and thus started the career of the best-paid German volleyball player.

In the beginning he was overlooked by some coaches due to his slow physical development, but from his 16th birthday onwards his steep career could not be stopped anymore. After studying at the volleyball
